Located on a hill towering above the city, the castle was built by Humber 1st, archbishop of Lyon, in the 11th century. He left the town to the Lord of Beaujeu after a dispute. Thereafter, Meximieux changed its sovereigns. It became Dauphinoise, then Savoyarde and definitely French in 1601. During the Revolution, the castle was demolished. The dungeon, the walls and the towers, collapsed. In the 19th century, from the base of the dungeon and a part of the north wall, the castle was rebuilt with a room to keep some ice and an orangery.
The 18th century formal gardens gave way to terraced gardens with ponds, rocks and rare species. After two fires, the outside of the castle is in ruins for good. In June 2013, the town of Meximieux bought the building and the gardens in order to create a relaxing space...
Meximieux changea de maîtres à plusieurs reprises. Elle fut dauphinoise, puis savoyarde et définitivement française en 1601. Pendant la Révolution, le château est démantelé. Le donjon, les murailles ainsi que les tours, s’effondrèrent.
Au 19e siècle, à partir des soubassements du donjon et d’une partie de la façade nord, le château fut reconstruit avec une glacière et une orangerie. Les jardins à la française du 18e siècle cédèrent la place à des jardins en terrasse, à des essences rares avec bassins et rocailles.
Après deux incendies, l’extérieur du château est définitivement en ruine. En juin 2013, la ville de Meximieux acquiert le bâtiment, le parc et les jardins afin de créer un espace de détente… Une table d'orientation agrémente le point de vue sur la ville et le grand parc arboré est le terrain de jeux idéal pour la famille. Le château est inaccessible en visite libre pour des raisons de sécurité.
