The Eglise Saint Jean Baptiste in Arêches is a fine, homogeneous example of Savoyard Baroque art, well worth a visit. With its basilica-style floor plan and particularly luminous altarpiece, the interior of the church creates a surprising contrast with the exterior.
The shell of the church was completed in 1829, while the rich, sumptuous interior decoration from Italy took several years to complete. The bulbous bell tower, traditional in Savoy, was built at the same time. The importance of imagery is noteworthy, facilitating an accessible representation of the Bible, the life of the Virgin Mary, Christ and the Saints, who are intermediaries with God.
