Exhibition "Swiss Modernity: the legacy of Hodler"

Event date

From 07/02 to 17/05/2026 on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, bank holidays and weekends between 10 am and 6 pm. On Tuesday between 2 pm and 6 pm.

the Palais Lumière honors Ferdinand Hodler (1853-1918) and the mark he left on Swiss painting.

Arrived in Geneva in 1871, this painter of Bernese origin became in a few decades a major figure.

The exhibition 'Modernités suisses: L'héritage de Hodler' questions this multiple influence.

It brings together both artists who have signed up in its lineage, such as Cuno Amiet, Giovanni Giacometti or Edouard Vallet, and others who have resolutely distanced themselves. While some turned to expressionism, divisionism or cubo-futurism, others were inspired by French realism or followed their own path.

From Félix Vallotton to Alice Bailly, from Alexandre Perrier to Gustave Buchet, the exhibition offers a rich and contrasting panorama of Swiss painting between 1880 and 1930.

Through this fruitful dialogue, she shows how much Hodler’s shadow and light continue to nourish the history of Swiss art.

This exhibition benefits from the collaboration of many museums in German-speaking and French-speaking Switzerland, as well as institutions, foundations and private collections.
