This massif takes its name from the dark colour of its rocks and its forest cover of cork and holm oaks.

A unique crystalline massif in the heart of limestone Provence, it forms a 57-kilometre long ellipse that follows the Mediterranean coastline, with Collobrières at its heart. This geographical feature contrasts with the rest of Provence and is marked by the presence of maquis, cork oaks, hundred-year-old chestnut trees, arbutus and cades as well as certain species of orchids and a rich and varied fauna including Hermann's tortoise. This rich and abundant biodiversity is highly protected.
