Harder than the Croix-de-Fer. A 6.6-km section of the switchbacks has an average gradient of 10.3%. Looking towards the Aiguilles d'Arves, it is easy to see why one of them is called the Tête de Chat (cat’s head).
Au départ de la Place de la Cathédrale à Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, prenez la direction de la Vallée de l'Arvan. Au rond-point Opinel, sur lequel se trouve le plus gros couteau Opinel du monde, suivez la direction d'Albiez-Montrond. La route du col du Mollard est en forêt, donc très agréable quand il fait chaud l'été. Après Albiez-Montrond, les arbres disparaissent et laissent place aux alpages où vous verrez de nombreux troupeaux. Franchissez le col du Mollard et redescendez en direction de Saint-Jean-d'Arves. 4,5 kilomètres après le col, tournez à gauche en direction Montrond et grimpez jusqu'au bout de la route.
Le panorama là-haut vous fera oublier les difficiles derniers kilomètres d'ascension.
