Ascent: from one of the two barn huts in the narrow valley, climb up the left bank of the Vallée Étroite stream to the Fonderie bridge (1
897 m). From here, climb straight north up the steep slopes that lead to a natural balcony beneath the southern ridge of Pointe Balthazar.
The slopes become gentler until you find the Vallon des Sables to your left (north). Climb up this valley, past the foot of Pointe Melchior, and then turn north-west to reach Pointe Balthazar (3,163 m) on very steep slopes.
Descent: follow the same route. The snow must be very stable. Slopes S 4.
