The Maurienne diocese dates back to the 6th century, and the palace was repeatedly destroyed, remodeled and enlarged until the early 19th century. Facing the cathedral, it has been listed as a historic monument since the mid-1980s.
Throughout its history, the Palais des évêques has welcomed the Princes of Savoy who have stopped off here. Modified over time, it is a fine example of Baroque architecture. Inside, a monumental staircase recalls those of Turin's finest palaces, such as the Palais Madame.
Two symmetrical flights of steps on either side of a corridor create a very Baroque setting: you'll be seen and seen again! Today, this staircase leads to the Musée des Costumes, Arts et Traditions Populaires.
The paintings in the hall and staircase were renovated in 2021.
