Les Monts d'Argent was the name of the municipality of Peisey during the French Revolution, reflecting the importance of the lead and silver mines
Discovered in 1644, the galena vein (silver-bearing lead sulfide) was mined until 1866.
Throughout the First French Empire, from 1802 to 1814, the French School of Mines was headquartered in Peisey.
It trained 70 engineers before being transferred to Paris to become the École Nationale Supérieure des Mines.
Located in Pont-Baudin, the Monts d'Argent site features a museum trail along which you will find information panels explaining the history of the exploitation of these silver-lead mines and their importance to the history of the Peisey-Nancroix valley.
Outdoors, you will have the opportunity to see the remains of the various facilities used to extract, wash, and smelt the ore. The tomb of Knight Rosenberg, buried on the mine site, as well as the "Mine Palace," a building where engineering students were housed, located at the end of a magnificent larch avenue on a 3-hectare site in a magnificent natural setting.
The museum trail is freely accessible year-round.
Guided tours are offered upon request by the Mine Palace Association from May to November.
