Chapelle St Claude et Ste Appolonie

The church was built in the 18th century to replace the old one, which, situated near the Nant St Claude, was destroyed by an overflow of this torrent in 1732. Thanks to the generosity of the King of Piedmont-Sardinia, whose coat of arms can be seen on the painting, the church boasts luxurious furnishings, including a rich 18th-century Baroque and Rococo altarpiece (listed). The superb wrought iron grille is said to have been made from iron extracted from a sunken hamlet called ‘le Lavanchet’ near La Thuile, on the left bank of the Isère. The date 1738 is inserted into the grille. Saint Appolonie is depicted in paintings and statues with the instrument of her martyrdom (all her teeth were pulled out). She was invoked against toothache.
