The current chapel dates from 1974, placed under the patronage of Sainte Agathe, protector against fires, celebrated on February 5. Adorned with some pieces of furniture from the 15th to the 17th century which come from the old chapel already mentioned in 1634.
The old chapel mentioned in 1634 stood on what is now the site of the Tourist Office. At that time, it is dedicated to Notre-Dame (Our Lady). Then, in 1777, Sainte Agathe and Saint Guérin were added as patrons. Severely damaged, it was destroyed when the resort was being developed.
The current chapel was built in 1988 on the site of the old mill.
Elements of the furnishings of the old building were brought together: twisted columns, Christ on the cross, statues of Saint Agathe, St Guérin ...
Agathe, who is originally from Sicily, died in 251 and is celebrated on February 5. Her cult is widespread throughout Italy, where she is appealed to for protection against volcanic eruptions, lightning, fires and earthquakes.
In the mountain villages of Savoy, like here in Montchavin, she is especially invoked for protection against fires. Here, as in many hamlets, fires were frequent, often caused by the fermentation of moist hay stored in the hayloft.
