La Vernaz Village

Se admiten animales: Non

A peaceful mountain village, La Vernaz sits at 800 metres like a sentinel between the Vallée d’Aulps and Brevon valley.

The entrance to the village when coming up from the Dranse river is marked by two stone pillars, old fortifications built by mountain folk back in the 16th century as defences against Swiss invaders. These symbolic gates are called the “Gates of the Watch” or “Gates of the Veros”, after the cry “deo vero” (true God) let out by the valley’s inhabitants, who were opposed to the Protestant God.

Don’t forget to visit: the Jotty gorges at the Pont du Diable (a natural site created by erosion by the Dranse river), fishing at the Jotty Lake, as well as the village discovery trail in the village centre (reading and drawing tables) and the hike to Mevonne meadows.
